About me.

These three photos are from October 29, 2021—the day I took the Oath of Office administered by the Chief Justice of Alberta.

My Education
I have a B.A. (Political Science) and an M.B.A., both from the University of Alberta.

My work experience
-
I am currently the elected CBE trustee for Wards 8 & 9 and my current four-year term goes until the end of October 2025. I love this role and would be honoured and delighted to continue as your Ward 8 & 9 representative for another four years.
-
Prior to being elected in October 2021, I spent 10 years as a consultant for the private, public, and not-for-profit sectors.
-
And prior to that I spent 10 years as a policy analyst for the Government of Alberta and The City of Calgary.

My family
My husband, Stephen, and I have three lovely children. We're fully immersed in the K-12 system because this year we had one kid in elementary school, one in middle school, and one in high school. All local CBE schools, of course!

My passion project
During my second maternity leave, I became an accredited facilitator for new-mom workshops, which I hosted in the 2010s. I even wrote a book based on the experience! Writing is a hobby I enjoy—I'm not cut out to make a living out of it.

My extensive volunteer service
I have over two decades of Board-level volunteer experience, including as president of a residents' association, vice-chair on a municipal board in Edmonton, and as a Board member with four different fundraising societies.
I'm also a super-volunteer at the school level. I chaired the committee that brought before-and-after-school care to my kids' school. I chaired the committee that built the new school playground. I'm a former school council chair. And I'm still out there, volunteering for field trips, bottle drives and special lunches at my kids' schools.

I agree whole-heartedly with the CBE's values:
-
Students come first
-
Learning is our central purpose
-
Public education serves the common good.
I am...
Budget savvy
I understand budgeting and financial statements, and I have an established track record of fiscally sound decision making.
Strategic
With nearly three decades of experience as a strategic analyst, I'm constantly testing the status quo and asking how we can do better. Continuous improvement leads to excellence.
A team player
As a lifelong community volunteer and former civil servant, I know how to work well with all levels of government. Finding common ground helps us move forward.
Engaged
I received and personally responded to 1,831 phone calls, emails and letters during my first term. Engaging with parents and other Calgarians helps trustees make decisions in the best interests of students.
committed
I am committed to this role as my full-time job. This means I will continue to meet with parents, guardians, elected MLAs, CBE staff members, and community members at your convenience: days, evenings and weekends.
My Top 3 accomplishments in my first term.
My Top 3 goals for a second term.
I will also keep advocating for...
Transportation
Improved safety. During the 2024-25 school year, the CBE saw an increase in the number of students being struck by vehicles near our schools.
We all need to pitch in and do our part to keep the youngest members of our city safe—no matter how they get to and from school.

Transportation
Fair funding. The provincial government claws back the CBE's transportation grant as our enrollment and our bus ridership increase. (That is not a typo. We get penalized for increasing enrollment.)

In the 2025-26 school year, over 7,000 additional students will become eligible for yellow bus transportation, and the CBE is hiring more bus drivers and creating additional bus routes, but we will have to do this with a $2.2 million reduction to the transportation grant from the provincial government. I find this shocking!

It’s particularly unfair that this deduction applies only to public school boards, and not chartered schools, and only in the metro areas, and not in rural areas.

We need to convince the provincial government to eliminate the enrolment-based deductions listed on page 83 of Alberta's Funding Manual for School Authorities.
Transportation
Bold thinking. In the 65 years or so since the yellow bus was first introduced in Alberta, we've ended up with a mishmash of different rules that apply to different kids. For example:
-
Some kids are eligible for yellow bussing and others aren't, even if they're the same age. We have some Grade 6 CBE students who have to take a Calgary Transit bus, then an LRT, then another Calgary Transit bus to get to school, while other Grade 6 CBE students are eligible for yellow bus service even though their home backs onto the school field. Not fair.
-
Some kids are eligible for yellow bus stops within walking distance of their homes and others aren't. CBE students who attend a CBE regular community school and all chartered-school students who attend a charter school are eligible for a yellow-bus stop based on a 1.6km- to a 2-km distance. But CBE students who attend a CBE alternative program might have an assigned yellow-bus stop as much as 5 km away. Not fair.
-
Some families have their before- and-after-school arrangements subsidized by the provincial government and others don't. Families gets subsidized by the provincial government for yellow bussing, but not for Calgary Transit and usually not for before-and-after-school care. Not fair.
The reasons we've ended up here are complex and challenging. They're due in part to:
-
Section 59 of the Education Act, which I've been told is interpreted to divide CBE students into "mandated" and "non-mandated" riders.
-
The CBE's preference for choosing to keep yellow bus fares as low as possible (far lower than Calgary Transit monthly Youth passes), instead of: (a) Choosing to expand eligibility for yellow bus service to more kids; and/or (b) Choosing to improve service levels by assigning yellow bus stop stops within 1.6 to 2 km of all yellow bus riders' homes.
-
The fact that Section C3.2 of the provincial funding manual allocates transportation funds differently for chartered, rural, urban and metro boards.
-
The provincial government's latest legislative changes to how the eligibility distances are calculated.
-
The provincial government's $4.7 million cut to the CBE's transportation grant over the past two years, at a time of rapid enrolment growth and expanding bus service.
-
The North-American-wide shortage of bus drivers.
-
The North-American-wide supply-chain issues that have created a shortage of busses.
-
The fact that the CBE runs more routes than Calgary Transit, but with fewer office staff.
-
Historical precedent, administrative inertia and the risk of public outrage and protest if a change were to be contemplated.

Finger-pointing, another financial review by the NDP, another financial audit by the UCP, another CBE-only review of our transportation model or another CBE-only review of our transportation services won't solve this.

We need a larger, bolder re-think of how we can most efficiently, effectively, and EQUITABLY support before- and after-school arrangements in Alberta's largest cities—with multiple stakeholders at the table.
